History of "Creatures of Habitat - Days of Action"
Once upon a time there were was one environmental knight who ran into 3 Musketeers... that was in December 2007.
They all had the same dream. Instead of fighting alone against pollution, destroyed creeks, green house gases and all these enemies who came along their path they wanted to have fun and get into action.
Fun with a lot of great little earthlings, "Creatures of Habitat - Days of Action 2009" was born. Along came another Musketeer and with her the connection to reach out to all kids in Grade 6 classes on our beautiful Peninsula.
Uniting Ian Bruce of Peninsula Streams, Anne-Marie Daniels of the Roy Group, Britta Frombach of SIWC, Susi McMillan of Riverbank Designs, and Tina Pierik of SD #63 the SIWC environmental committee was established by March 2008.
This event has now evolved to partnering with students from Royal Roads University to create experiential opportunities for University students while educating the younger generation. These Days of Action events target youth of today who will be the heroes of tomorrow. The events will inspire Grade 6 students to care for their local environment, learn solutions and build skills to uncover how the wider world works.
Through Community Student Interviews (CSI) before the event to Superhero visits after, the educational series culminates on Earth Day 2009 at the Mary Winspear Centre, Sidney BC. The SD #63 Peninsula Environmental Superhero contest winner will be unveiled and there will be activities, presentations and field trips to inspire Peninsula students – the leaders of the future – on the path to wellness.
